Tutorial – The Instagram filter trend (do it yourself)

So, I picked up on the fact that you guys appreciate my small tutorials so here’s yet another one! Almost everything I know from Photoshop is self-learnt. I mean, we had a mandatory course in it last year in Uni, but I didn’t learn anything. Hehe.

Anyway, today I’m going to show you how to get a blue mist filter look to your images. It’s a cool effect that can spice up almost any picture. For this example, I borrowed a photo of a penguin (I like penguins) from Barcelona Zoo which my good friend Johanna took, and we will go from this:

penguineto this:

Ready? OK!

Step 1: Use curves to create contrast. Go to Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Curves and create an S-shape similar to this or until you see the contrast fit:

Step 2: Create a blue color spot. Go to Layer – New Fill Layer – Gradient.

Skärmavbild 2013-02-02 kl. 14.32.46

In the first box that pops up you change Mode to Screen and Opacity to 60%.

In the next dialogue box you need to choose your gradient. Click on the Gradient box to get there, and to create your own gradient.

Skärmavbild 2013-02-02 kl. 14.37.32

Set the lower left color box to the blue color #31c2ff and the lower right to a slightly lighter one #a0e1fc. The upper right box needs to have Opacity 0% in order for the gradient to fade from blue to nothing.

Give your gradient a name and click New. You’ll use it again in the next step. Click OK.

Skärmavbild 2013-02-02 kl. 14.41.24

Set style to Radial to get a round gradient and set the Angle to around 40°. Click OK.

Step 3: Get a deeper blue tone. Create another Gradient Fill the same way as in Step 2.

Skärmavbild 2013-02-02 kl. 14.43.57

Set Mode to Screen again but drag Opacity down to 30%.

In the next dialogue box you choose the gradient you just saved (if you didn’t save it you need to create it again). Leave Style setting at Linear and Angle 90°. Change Scale to 150% and click OK.

Skärmavbild 2013-02-02 kl. 14.45.20

Step 4: Last color adjustments. If you’re satisfied you can skip this step, but if you want some last adjustments create a new Adjustment Layer at Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Color Balance.

Skärmavbild 2013-02-02 kl. 14.49.57

Only adjust the Midtones. Get more red and blue into the image, around 20% on both colors should do it.

And then you’re done!

Trend Forecasts 2013 – beauty edition

Here’s to being to tired that you write addiction instead of addition… Anywho, quick entry about my not-so-favorite-subject: Makeup. I don’t like makeup. I don’t know how to apply makeup and I think I look like a clown in red lipstick while my friends look like Goddesses of Beauty. But as a modern girl, you can’t really live without makeup either, so here is what I’m going with this spring.

  • Dark eye shades. Not black, more chocolate brown to camel and all that’s in between.
  • Nude lipstick. Still searching for the perfect one.
  • Coral nails when the sun pops out and the skin on my hands starts to move to a more pleasing color than the Edward Cullen-white it is now.
  • Rose pink blush cheeks.

Those are my two cents! Now it’s time for some well-needed SLEEP because this weekend has not exactly been overflown with that.

Golden Globes 2013 – Inspiration

Above is an inspirational little piece I put together from my favorite assembles from the Golden Globes last week. Absolute favorites were Jessica Alba’s Oscar de la Renta and Kate Hudson in Alexander McQueen. But the deeper meaning about this creation is: accessorize accessorize accessorize! And there you have it. Now my energy is all put into hoping that Les Mis will win big time at the Oscars too. Ciao!

Tutorial – Aged photography

Today in part 2 of the Mini Tutorials we will learn how to go from this:

to this:

Because sometimes there is nothing better than an old, antique feeling to a photography, am I right? Of course I am.

So start off with your chosen image. I chose this one of our summer house in Stockholm’s archipelago. The place have a history, so it’s only fair that it’s well-represented in the photo as well!

1. The first thing you need to do is create contrast in your photo, as old images often have dark parts and a lot of blacken in them. Create a new layer at Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Curves. Create a sort of S shape like I did below, until you reach satisfactory result.
Skärmavbild 2013-01-13 kl. 15.08.39

2. Create a sepia gradient. Go to Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Gradient Map. Open up Gradient Editor to create the perfect gradient for your image. Under the gradient box, click the left square and change the color to #1a1811. Do the same thing for the right box but change to color #f2ece4. This gives you a gradient going from almost black to egg shell white, but you’re not quite there yet. Click anywhere below the gradient box to create a new square, fill it with color #a09882, and placement around 70%.
Skärmavbild 2013-01-13 kl. 15.10.59

3. You could claim your image done. But if you want to take it a step further and really enhance the image of being old and worn you can add brushes to that. Brushes can be downloaded for free from a variety of sources, but I got mine from here. Create a new layer, set the opacity to around 15-20% and give your creativity a go.

And you’re done! Not that hard at all.

How to style those christmas gifts for upcoming springtime

The beige cardigan in this board was a christmas gift from my mom. It’s made out of alpaca wool and comes from Swedish designer Filippa K. This spring, I will style it to be worn more as a jacket as opposed to a cardigan, and match it with items similar to the above. The wide 70s pants are from Stella McCartney, the bag Marc by Marc Jacobs (that one I already got. Wohoo almost there!), the shoes are Jimmy Choo and the silver/gold rings are from H&M. To be matched with dark red on both lips and nails. Never liked those pastel bright colors anyway. Rawr.

The golden New Years

If you’re anything like me you’re starting to freak out about not knowing what to wear for New Years. Or what to do. Or eat. Or drink. Basically, you’re in the dark about everything.Thank God for Michael Kors and his inspiring creations. Not that I could afford to actually buy it but you know… Inspiration and stuff is almost as good as the real deal. Or whatever.

Tutorial – Smoothen faces and settle skin color

Here’s my first entry in this new category: Photoshop tutorials! This one is really really really basic, and involves my favorite filter, Reduce Noice.

Let’s take a look at the first picture:
Skärmavbild 2012-12-17 kl. 21.06.54

Charming, eh? That’s my friend Christopher for you single ladies out there.
Next up, we want the Noise filter option.
Skärmavbild 2012-12-17 kl. 21.11.51

That gives us a smoother face surface.
Skärmavbild 2012-12-17 kl. 21.07.04

But I don’t like the pink-ish color of the face. So next up, Image – Adjustment – Replace Color.
Skärmavbild 2012-12-17 kl. 21.18.23
Select the skin you want adjusted, and drag the Hue until you reach color satisfaction.
Skärmavbild 2012-12-17 kl. 21.18.58

Skärmavbild 2012-12-17 kl. 21.07.12

Almost there! Just want the teeth a bit whiter too while we’re at it. Select the teeth using the Quick Mask Mode:

Next up, Image – Adjustments – Brightness/Contrast
Skärmavbild 2012-12-17 kl. 22.20.17

Drag Brightness bar until teeth reach perfect-Hollywood-smile status.
Skärmavbild 2012-12-17 kl. 22.21.10

Et voilá! The hotness improved.
Skärmavbild 2012-12-17 kl. 22.20.05

The easiest way to quickly improve your Facebook profile pic! You didn’t hear it from me.

All I want for Christmas is you… Right, get me a diamond necklace or something.

Ps: Wouldn’t say no to the little grumpy cat either… I adore that angry thing.

Miranda Kerr and her Bambi bag

Saw this photo of Miranda Kerr on a board on Pinterest (I AM such a Pinterest slut, taking everything from everyone) and I loved the simplicity of her outfit. That generated an equally simple but visually nice for the eyes little design. I would take the hat, the little jean jacket and the doe bag (!!!). Let’s ignore the fact that the bag is probably made out of Bambi’s mother and just stare at it in awe for a while.
